Emma Leach

Where did you complete most of your training?
I completed the UBC Master’s program in Genetic Counselling in 2015.

What is your special area of interest?
My area of interest is “cardiogenetics” (genetics related to the heart). This is a relative new field that is rapidly advancing as we learn more and more about how our genes contribute to the development and health of our heart.

What is the best thing about working in CHD?
I really enjoy working in a multidisciplinary clinic and working closely with cardiologist and nurse colleagues where we each contribute our own expertise and collaborate to provide the best patient care.

What is one thing that you think that all patients with CHD should know?
Congenital Heart conditions can run in families. Meeting with a genetic counsellor to review personal and family history can provide patients with information about possible chance of other family members inheriting the condition and appropriate genetic testing options. We can also provide genetics-related information and resources and supportive counselling.

If you weren’t a genetic counselor, what would you be?
I would love to be a marine biologist and study whales, they are amazing!

Do you have any interesting hobbies or talents or pets?
My favourite hobby is scuba diving, both on vacation and at home in Vancouver
